In the United States, ransom payments following ransomware attacks totaled $ 590 million in the first half of 2021. That's 42 percent more than the number of suspicious payments reported for all of 2020, according to a report by the U.S. Treasury Department.

If the trend continues, there could be "higher ransomware-related transaction value" throughout 2021 than the past decade combined. The report is based on reports of suspicious financial transactions, which are usually made via cryptocurrencies.
