There are games that can define an entire genre and The Secret of Monkey Island, released 32 years ago, is certainly one of them. Ron Gilbert and LucasArts elevated graphic adventure with him and it's hard to find a gamer born in the 80s or 90s who doesn't instantly recognize lines and scenes from it (Look behind you, a monkey with three heads!).
Now, more than three decades later, Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, writers of the original game, will create a new title together with LucasFilm Games, Return to Monkey Island, which although it is technically the sixth official game in the saga, will be in charge of closing the story of the original Monkey Island and its sequel, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.

Gilbert announced the new installment on his website on April 1, April Fools' Day in the US. This led many of his followers to think that it was a joke, but Devolver, the studio in charge of distributing the adventure together with Lucasfilm Games, has confirmed the launch for this 2022.

The game will be developed by Terrible Toybox, Gilbert's own company. Series composers Michael Land, Peter McConnel, and Clint Bajakian will be responsible for the game's music, and Dominic Armato, who voiced series protagonist Guybrush Threepwood in all of the Monkey Island games to date, will return repeat the role.
The two original games were reissued in 2009 and 2010 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the saga, with reinterpreted cartoon-style graphics that will be maintained in the new installment twelve years later.
