The Twitter clone initiated by ex-US President Trump is now available for US users in the App Store. However, the app is still struggling with starting problems.
The media group of former US President Donald Trump has launched the Internet platform Truth Social. The app has been available for download for people in the USA since Monday morning.
"I think we'll be fully operational by the end of March -- at least within the United States," Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) boss Devin Nunes previously told Fox News.
Many people report starting problems with the app. For example, some people are currently getting error messages when trying to create a new account. Others were initially given a waiting number due to “high demand”, as reported by the technology magazine Cnet.

The website is also currently unavailable. It is unclear whether the servers are actually on strike due to the influx of visitors or whether they are currently being brought to their knees by opponents of Trump through so-called DDoS attacks, in which websites are torpedoed with thousands of simultaneous requests.
The specialist magazine The Verge also writes that the Truth Social website is not protected by HTTPS. The communication protocol is now actually standard because it enables encrypted transmission of data. If a website does not use it, its operators accept that the data of visitors can be intercepted during transport. The missing HTTPS in the case of Truth Social may still be related to the technical problems.

However, there was trouble even before the start: there were allegations that the developers of the Twitter-like platform should have violated open source licenses. Trump's network is said to be on the freely available microblogging serviceMastodon based.
Trump's first attempt at an alternative platform failed
According to Devin Nunes, users themselves decide "what they want on the platform". This differentiates Truth Social from "any sort of Silicon Valley tech oligarch freak telling people what to think and deciding who can and can't be on the platform," Nunes said. US corporations such as Facebook and Twitter had blocked Trump's profiles for spreading hate and misinformation. Referring to a supposed cancel culture, Nunes said : "It's really very moving for me to see people who are on the platform and whose voice has been canceled."
Together with Digital World Acquisition Corp, TMTG raised $293 million on the US stock exchange. In December, both groups announced they had received an additional $1 billion in funding. Truth Social is intended to appeal to users who are turning away from the established platforms because of alleged restrictions on freedom of expression. Gettr, which was launched by Trump's former advisor Jason Miller in early July, as well as Parler and Gab have already positioned themselves in the market.
Trump's first attempt to create an alternative online medium failed last year. The blog From the Desk of Donald J. Trump, in which the ex-president himself had written posts with the hope that they would be shared widely on well-known social networks, was shut down in June after just one month. Since then, Trump's team has focused on creating an alternative network similar in form to Twitter.
