The South Korean technology company Samsung has presented the fourth generation of its foldable smartphones. The devices, dubbed the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, are slated to launch at the end of August.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 can be folded out and, at 7.6 inches, offers a screen that is roughly twice the size of a conventional smartphone. It comes with 12 gigabytes of RAM and a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. The smartphone is equipped with four cameras.

Compared to the previous generation, Samsung has equipped the Fold 4 with a significantly better wide-angle lens, instead of twelve megapixels it is now 50 megapixels strong. Samsung is also promoting the smartphone with more multitasking options: users should be able to drag links, images and others directly from one app to the other. The cheapest version of the fold costs 1,800 euros and the most expensive 2,160 euros.
Flip 4 is designed to load faster and take better photos
The second foldable device that Samsung presented was the Galaxy Z Flip 4. In contrast to the Fold, its 6.7-inch display is about the size of a conventional smartphone when unfolded. Like previous clamshell phones, you can fold it up to make it smaller.
It comes with eight gigabytes of memory and also the new Snapdragon processor. The battery should be able to be charged to 50 percent within 30 minutes. The camera is twelve megapixels, just like the previous model, but the sensor should be larger.

Samsung advertises the smaller device with a FlexCam mode: It should be possible to record videos or group selfies from different angles. The cheapest model is available for 1,100 euros. If you want more storage space, you have to calculate up to 1,200 euros. The displays are said to be 45 percent more durable on both smartphones. The first Fold generations still had to deal with massive problems, buyers and testers complained about cracked screens.
Foldable smartphones remain a niche
Samsung has also introduced a new generation of headphones called the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. They're said to be the company's lightest headphones to date. In addition, the company also presented the new generation of smartwatches with the models Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.
Samsung is considered the market leader among manufacturers of foldable smartphones. According to the South Korean company, it shipped ten million foldable smartphones in 2021, an increase of 300 percent compared to the previous year. Analysts estimate that the number may be slightly lower.
Even if the growth was high, foldable smartphones remain a niche: According to analyses, 1.35 billion smartphones were shipped in 2021. Even at Samsung, which sold 272 million smartphones last year, foldable phones only make up a fraction.
