With the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max lineup, Apple has rolled out a brand-new camera feature called Reference Image. Naturally, it’s got tech enthusiasts and pop-culture junkies asking the million-dollar question: Can this finally put an end to celebrity deepfakes?
The short answer? Not quite on its own. But it is a fascinating step in the right direction. Let’s break down what this feature actually does, why it matters, and where it falls short.
What Exactly Is Apple Reference Image?
Forget the idea of a magical button that scans any random picture on your phone and yells, "FAKE!" That’s not what this is.
Instead, think of Apple Reference Image as a high-tech digital negative.
When a photographer uses the iPhone 18 Pro’s opt-in Reference mode to snap a photo, the phone does something clever. The camera sensor essentially signs the pixels it captures, while Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system generates an unalterable reference image stored right alongside the original file.
Here’s where the flexibility comes in: you can still edit, crop, color-correct, and share the everyday version of that photo however you like. But that hidden reference image stays locked in the background. If anyone ever wants to check if the photo was tampered with later—say, by swapping a face, altering an outfit, or dropping a celebrity into a fake background—they can compare the final version to the original camera capture.
In short, it’s a built-in cryptographic receipt for your photos.
Can It Detect Random Deepfakes on Social Media?
Here is the catch that everyone needs to understand: Apple Reference Image is not a universal deepfake detector.
If you pull a random paparazzi photo off Instagram, a sketchy screenshot from X (formerly Twitter), or a forwarded celebrity pic from WhatsApp, your iPhone 18 Pro cannot magically tell you if it’s AI-generated.
Why? Because the feature relies on the image originating from the phone with Reference mode turned on.

However, if a viral photo doesn’t have an Apple Reference Image attached to it, that doesn't automatically mean it’s fake. Because it shifts the power back toward proven authenticity.
