The Galaxy S22 Ultra will have an integrated digital pen, like the old Galaxy Note. It also launches a tablet to compete with the iPad Pro and Surface.
Samsung's Galaxy S family will grow this 2022. The Korean company has presented today, in an international virtual event, three phones and three tablets with different screen sizes, but that share a processor and, in the case of phones, photographic aspirations.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S22 ULTRA
The most ambitious device presented today is the S22 Ultra, which is the first Galaxy S to inherit the digital pen from the Galaxy Note. The S21 Ultra, launched last year, also supported this accessory, but it had to be purchased separately and there was no hole in the phone to store it.

It's now built into the device and Samsung has reduced latency, which means the experience will be more like writing on paper. There are also new applications to quickly write notes without having to leave the web browser or other open apps.
The other feature it stands out for, as is often the case with high-end phones, is the camera. It has a rear module with four sensors. There is a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle, a 108-megapixel main wide-angle sensor and two 3- and 10-megapixel telephoto sensors of 10-megapixel each. On the front, Samsung has integrated a 40 megapixel camera.
Samsung has significantly improved night photography, with better low-light sensitivity and several artificial intelligence routines that allow more detail to be brought out of the dark areas of the image. Portrait mode has been improved as well, with particular attention to common issues with portrait mode such as hair trimming, and Samsung has created a more advanced RAW (uncompressed) photo capture feature, with more information on the resulting image for greater editing versatility.

There are news also in video. During recording the phone can automatically select the number of frames per second based on available light and has a better stabilization system. The camera app is also capable of detecting multiple people in the recording field and automatically framing them so they look good in the final video.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra debuts Samsung's new family of processors built on a 4-nanometer process and a new coprocessor for machine learning and AI features that's twice as powerful as the previous generation.
The Ultra is the largest of the new Galaxy devices, with a 6.8-inch screen and 120Hz refresh rate. It has a 5,000 mAh battery and can be charged with up to 45W of power.

The device can be reserved from today and will be available from February 25 at an approximate price of 1,249 euros for the entry model, with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.
GALAXY S22 AND S22+
The other phones announced today are somewhat more modest, although they are also high-end models equipped with latest-generation cameras and processors. We are talking about the Galaxy S22 and S22+ , which are an evolution of the current S21, with 6.1 and 6.6-inch screens and 120 Hz refresh rate.
The phones have three cameras on the back. As in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, there is a 12 megapixel ultra wide angle, a main angular sensor that in this case has a little less resolution, 50 megapixels, and a 3 and 10 megapixel telephoto sensor. The front camera is also somewhat less powerful, with 10 megapixels instead of 40 on the Ultra model.
The video and night photography functions, in any case, are similar and the phones, such as the Ultra model, have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen for biometric identification.

Slightly smaller in size, these models also have a smaller battery and only the S22+ supports 45W charging. The S22 has fast charging, but is limited to 25W. They can be reserved from today and will be available in mid-March. The S22 starts at 849 euros with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The S22+ at 1,049 euros for the same memory features.
GALAXY TAB S8
Although the phones are undoubtedly the most important announcement of the day, Samsung has also taken advantage of this event to present a new tablet focused on creative and professional users.
This is the Galaxy Tab S8, which is available in three screen sizes (11, 12.4 and 14.6 inches with the names S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra to differentiate them). It is an AMOLED screen with 120 Hz and a very thin frame, interrupted only by a small notch in the camera area.

The device is very powerful, a direct competitor to Apple's iPad Pro or Microsoft's Surface that can be configured with 16Gb of RAM and up to 1TB of space. Like the Galaxy S, these tablets also use the latest generation of Samsung processors, manufactured with a 4-nanometer process, and boast a 15-minute battery life.
The S-Pen stylus is included with the device and magnetically attaches to the tablet for portability and charging.
Samsung has adapted Android and its OneUI customization layer to take advantage of the larger screen and allow a better experience with multiple windows and apps open simultaneously. But if you attach a keyboard case, the Tab8 can also change the desktop to a more conventional laptop-like environment, with floating windows and mouse pointer support.

The tablet has four speakers and supports Dolby Atmos. It will stand out when it comes to playing movies and series, but also during the increasingly frequent -in this era of pandemic- videoconferences. Three built-in microphones reduce ambient video during video calls, and the front camera, which covers an angle of 120 degrees, automatically frames those who are taking part in them.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
It is paradoxical that now that the Galaxy S22, in all its forms, have the personality more marked than ever, it is precisely when they are most reminiscent of the iPhone. Not physically -or not only physically, because the cheapest models give themselves an air-, but as a finished product, a flagship, and even as a phone with something to say. It is, without a doubt, the line that all Samsung terminals should follow in the future.
The constellation of lenses on the rear of the Galaxy S22 Ultra occupies almost a quarter of the entire surface and is not suitable for trypophobics. Despite this, it is elegant and each abyss makes sense throughout the whole. Meanwhile, his colleagues in the catalog opt for a triple lens resolved with a simplicity that seems incredible that it had not happened so far.
Twitter Opens Tests |
This feeling of a mature device is helped by the aluminum and glass of their bodies, which fund the checks issued by the design: it is as good as it seems. Screen, speakers and performance should accompany, although for that it will be necessary to test them more thoroughly.
Galaxy S22 and S22+ benefit a lot from this new look. They do not look like the cheap version of the main model, but phones from a range of their own with their characteristics and circumstances. One would have to ask, in fact, if they should not be the protagonists and the Ultra the exaggerated and histrionic version. And it could be, although, in reality, it seems that the variant that is beginning to be left over in the equation now that the pencil fits in this range is the Note.
When it comes to tablets, the Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy Tab S8+ suffer from middle-child syndrome: all the attention is on everyone else. It makes sense, because the market for these devices is already a market that seems saturated and with little else to say, while phones are the absolute protagonists of the launch. For its part, Tab S8 Ultra is the newborn that takes all the looks and cuddles.
The 2022 Winter Olympics |
The truth is that it makes sense. In addition to being the novelty, it is a huge tablet, with a spectacular screen and surprisingly powerful speakers. It is, in a way, like carrying a small – in this comparison – personal movie screen.
The user experience is amazing and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is positioned as one more alternative for the still suspicious convertible market. Its Android environment is not as useful to impersonate an ultrabook as the Windows Surface can do, but it makes up for it by the inch. Of course, the pencil and the keyboard become essential accessories for that purpose.
However, the size, whatever they say, matters and here it sins by excess. Thus, it will be difficult to handle the tablet holding it with one hand (despite the fact that weight, thickness and frames are very balanced) and normally you will have to rest on your forearm.
In prolonged use sessions this can be uncomfortable. It remains to be seen if it will be a point against or a simple asterisk in a device that, for the first time, does look galactic.
